Outdoor patio shades provide privacy and much needed-protection from the UV rays of the sun. Shades are available in a variety of design and materials. Let’s take a closer look at the available options.
Corded Vs. Cordless Shades
Besides a crank lift, you can find shades that have cordless, continuous loop, or motorized lift. With the cordless option, the control system will be hidden, unlike the lift on standard shades. Cordless shades are also a good option if you have kids or pets that can access the lift. The continuous call loop is a good for large shades, because they are attached to a window frame or wall. The arrangement also hides some of the cords that’re visible otherwise. As the name suggests, the motorized option helps you move the shades with a button.
Light Control
You have many options for light and view control. If you’re looking for maximum light blockage, go for a solar shade that blocks 99% of light. Besides this and other tight weaves, you also have many loose-weave shades that give you a balance between light control and view-ability. The openness percentage of the weave is usually between 1% and 14%. The lower the percentage, the better the light blockage.
Fabrics and Colours
Exterior shades come in many textures, patterns and neutral tones, including blue, brown, grey, and black tones. The prices are typically lower if you choose one of the standard fabric sizes provided by the manufacturer. Sellers usually mention the UV blockage percentage of the shades.
Solar-Powered Shades
Besides electric motors, some manufacturers also offer solar-powered motors. The motor comes with a solar panel and battery. You’ll have to set up the solar panel, so it powers the battery. Along with using renewable energy, solar motors are also safer with kids because there are no electric cords.
Other Considerations
Since the shades will be used outside, ask for what weather resistance the fabric and other parts have. Good protection from the elements will ensure that the fabric doesn’t fade or grow moulds. Also, check for what warranties they offer and for what parts.
